Types of websites
A website is collection of documents written in the HTML and/ or other scripting or server languages; such as Javascript or Coldfusion. When a user looks at a website with a browser, the browser is able to follow the instructions presented to it in HTML to make a website look a certain way.
- Static – a static website, is a website that shows the exact
same content every time, no matter who browses to the site. Its content
was written directly into the HTML code, and when the user goes to the
site, that code is downloaded into a browser and interpreted.
Static websites are best for sites that provide information that won’t change often; updates are made on an as-needed basis, perhaps a few times a year. - Dynamic – a dynamic website is one whose content is regenerated every time a user visits or reloads the site. Content can be generated based on who is browsing the site, certain request a user might make, based on some event like time of day, or if this is the 5th time a specific user logged on to the site show a specific message, and so forth.
- Data-driven – a data-driven website has many advantages over a static site. The most important is that it allows you, the website owner, to make changes any time you want – all without having to rely on a developer or knowing HTML programming. Data-driven websites are also connected to a data source, generally a database. This allows for the storage and retrieval of a great variety of information.
- Web Application – web applications are modular applications that can be published, located, and invoked across the Web. Web applications perform functions, which can be anything from simple requests to complicated business processes. Though web applications are found on the internet, they are more applicable toward intranets. The most common web application found on the internet, is an e-commerce shopping cart and checkout system.
- Content Management Systems – A content management system allows non-technical users to publish new content to their websites. These systems eliminate the need for content writers to be concerned with the technical details. Content management system can be custom built, or they can be bought as out-of-the-box software.
- Internet – The Internet is millions of computers around the world connected to each other. When you're on the Internet, your computer is connected to others by networks of telephone wire, cable and satellite. The Web, e-mail, chat, and newsgroups are things you can do on the Internet.
- Intranet – an intranet is basically a private internet. Generally localized to a company or an organization. Only employees or members have access to services on their intranets.

The more pages you have, the more of your pages that will appear in a search engine. The more pages, the more likely someone is to find you. Thus, content, especially multiple page content, is the biggest determining factor in search engine ranking.
- Search Engine Optimization is about creating Web pages that are ranked highly in search engines. A site’s SEO involves taking into consideration the purpose of the site, who the site is intended to attract, and how the site wants visitors to behave. A fully optimized site is built around core keywords and or phrases, which defines the site’s goal; these keywords are what connect the site to its targeted audience.
